Description

The P-47D, the forerunner of the P-47N, was used in large numbers in the European theatre of war. It proved that the limit of its range had been reached there. However a heavy fighter was needed for use in the Pacific to accompany the bombers on their long-haul flights. To solve this a new wing was designed with built-in fuel tanks and a wider span. The P-47N thus equipped had a range of up to 3,780 km and proved to be extremely effective. In addition to the eight guns in the wings, the Thunderbolt could carry twelve 127 mm rockets. From December 1944 to December 1945, a total of 1,806 type P-47N planes were made. With a length of 11.07 m the wing span was extended to 12.98 m. The 2800 hp Pratt & Whitney R-5800-57C, 18 cylinder radial engine enabled the Thunderbolt to accelerate to 740 km/h by a height of 10,000 m.
