Description
The Republic P-43 B/C Lancer was an improved variant of the earlier P-43 designed to offer better performance and versatility in high-altitude operations. Equipped with a turbo-supercharged Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engine, it delivered good speed and climb rates, making it suitable for interception and reconnaissance missions. The B and C models featured upgraded armament, including multiple .50-caliber machine guns, and minor structural refinements, but they still lacked armor protection and self-sealing fuel tanks. Primarily supplied to China under Lend-Lease, the P-43 B/C saw limited combat but served an important role in pilot training and early air defense. It laid the groundwork for the far more successful P-47 Thunderbolt.
