Description
The Reggiane Re.2005 was an advanced Italian fighter of World War II, powered by the German DB 605 engine and developed to succeed earlier Re.2000 and Re.2002 designs. First flown in 1942, it featured a new airframe, excellent high-altitude performance, and heavy armament of three 20 mm cannons and two 12.7 mm machine guns. Only limited numbers were produced due to engine shortages and Italy’s war situation. Operated by No. 362 Squadriglia, it excelled against USAAF bombers but was vulnerable at low altitude, especially against Spitfires. A few Re.2005s were used by the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana and captured by the Luftwaffe, with most destroyed during the war. Wingspan 11 m, length 8.73 m, max speed 628 km/h, ceiling 11,500 m, range 980 km.
