The Reggiane Re 2005 Sagittario was an Italian WWII fighter considered one of the most beautiful Axis aircraft. It had exceptional performance but limited production due to bombing. Some were later used by Germany after Italy's surrender.

Description

The Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario, often called "the most beautiful Axis fighter," combined elegant design with excellent performance and handling. A development of earlier Reggiane fighters, it featured powerful armament and a top speed of 678 km/h. First flown in late 1942, it entered service in May 1943 with the Regia Aeronautica, defending Naples and Rome. Production was limited due to Allied bombing and Italy’s 1943 armistice. Of 750 ordered, only a few were built. Some were later tested by the Luftwaffe with German DB605A engines and VDM propellers, but their ultimate fate remains unclear.
