Description
The RA-5C Vigilante was a high-speed, carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft developed from the supersonic A-5 Vigilante. Operated by the United States Navy during the Cold War and Vietnam War, it featured advanced cameras and sensors in a nose bay for strategic reconnaissance. Powered by twin General Electric J79 turbojet engines, the RA-5C combined Mach 1 speeds with long-range capability. Its sleek design included high-mounted wings and a streamlined fuselage. Although complex and maintenance-intensive, it provided vital intelligence over hostile territory, with crews trained for high-speed, low- and high-altitude missions. The RA-5C remained in service until 1979, leaving a legacy as one of the U.S. Navy’s most capable reconnaissance aircraft.
