Description
The PZL.43 Chayka was the Bulgarian version of the Polish PZL.43 reconnaissance bomber, adapted for export in the late 1930s. It featured a powerful Gnome-Rhone engine, a redesigned nose, and a repositioned rear gunner station for better defense. Bulgaria ordered the aircraft to modernize its air force, receiving the first 12 units in 1937. The Chayka could carry bombs internally and under the wings, serving in reconnaissance and light bombing roles. Though modern at delivery, it was considered outdated by the start of World War II. Still, the Chayka remained in service for training, patrol, and support missions into the early 1940s. Its use helped shape Bulgaria’s aviation development and maintenance standards.
