Description
The Polikarpov I-153 "Chaika" was a Soviet biplane fighter developed in the late 1930s as an improved version of the I-15 series. Featuring a distinctive gull-shaped upper wing, retractable landing gear, and a more powerful Shvetsov M-62 radial engine, it combined maneuverability with modernized features. Armed with four machine guns and capable of carrying small bombs or rockets, it saw combat during the Soviet-Japanese border conflicts and early World War II. Though agile, it was soon outclassed by newer monoplane fighters. Over 3,400 were built. Despite its obsolescence by 1941, the I-153 remained in service in secondary roles such as ground attack and training into the mid-war years.
