The Polikarpov I-153 was a Soviet biplane fighter developed in 1937. It featured improved armament and engines over its predecessors, with around 3,400 produced and used extensively by Soviet forces in the early stages of WWII.

Description

In the end of 1937 Nikolai Polikarpov began work on the further development of his I-15/I-15bis biplane fighter design. The designer was guided at the moment only by his experience and the remarks of the combat pilots. His main objective was producing a mach light weight machine intended for a day time combat. The obsolete PV-1machine guns were replaced with ShKAS with the rate of fair 1800 shots per minute. With M-25V engine the flight weight of the 800 hp M-62 was used in the largest number of aircraft, around 3,000 in total. The 1,100 hp(at take-off) M-63 was used in 409 aircraft. A total of 3,400 I-153 were produced. Soviet AF units deployed along the western border in June 1941 also had around 1300 I-153.With additional I-153s flown by 61st, 62nd, 66th, 74th, 241st 299ShAP (Sturmovoy AviaPolk - Attack Air Regiment) I-153s were also operated by the air forces at the Baltic, North and Black Sea Fleets.
