Description
The Polikarpov I-153 “Chaika” was a Soviet biplane fighter developed in the late 1930s as an advanced evolution of the I-15 series. Designed by Nikolay Polikarpov, it emphasized low weight, high maneuverability, and improved combat effectiveness based on pilot feedback. Powered by the M-62 radial engine, the I-153 featured a retractable landing gear and achieved a top speed of about 264 mph, a notable improvement for a biplane. Armed with four high-rate-of-fire ShKAS machine guns, it excelled in dogfights at low and medium altitudes. Entering service in 1939, the I-153 replaced earlier biplane fighters and saw combat at Khalkhin Gol against Japanese forces. Though quickly outclassed by modern monoplanes, the “Chaika” proved agile, reliable, and effective in skilled hands.
