Description
The Polikarpov I-153 "Chaika" (Seagull) was a Soviet biplane fighter developed in the late 1930s. A refinement of the earlier I-15 series, it featured a distinctive gull-shaped upper wing and retractable landing gear—rare for biplanes. Powered by a Shvetsov radial engine, it had improved speed and agility. Armed with four 7.62 mm machine guns and capable of carrying bombs or rockets, the I-153 was effective in early WWII and the Winter War. However, by 1941 it was outclassed by faster monoplane fighters. Still, it served in combat, training, and secondary roles. Its agility and ruggedness made it a favorite among some pilots, but it marked the end of the biplane era in Soviet frontline service.
