Description
The F-14 Tomcat served as one of the most capable fighters in the Iranian Air Force after Iran acquired 79 aircraft from the United States during the 1970s. Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the end of U.S. support many expected the fleet to become inoperable. However Iranian technicians and engineers managed to keep a significant number flying through local maintenance reverse engineering and limited access to spare parts. During the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988 the F-14 became a vital air defense asset protecting Iranian airspace and intercepting Iraqi aircraft. Equipped with the powerful AWG-9 radar and long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile the Tomcat achieved numerous aerial victories and deterred enemy operations. Decades later upgraded F-14s remain in service making Iran the only country still operating the aircraft today.
