Description
The Northrop P-61C Black Widow was the final and most advanced variant of America’s first dedicated night fighter. Based on the earlier P-61B, the P-61C featured significant upgrades, including a turbo-supercharged R-2800-73 engine, boosting top speed to over 685 km/h (425 mph) and improving high-altitude performance. It retained the radar-equipped nose and four 20mm cannons and four .50 cal machine guns. The P-61C also had improved cooling systems and dive flaps. Despite its performance, the war ended before most P-61Cs saw combat. A few were converted for weather research and testing, and the type was retired by 1950. Only 41 P-61Cs were built before production ended.
