Description
The P-61A Black Widow was the first operational U.S. aircraft designed specifically as a night fighter. Developed by Northrop, it featured a crew of three, airborne radar, and heavy armament: four 20mm cannons in the belly and four .50 cal machine guns in a remote-controlled top turret. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10 engines, the P-61A could reach speeds over 590 km/h (370 mph). It made its combat debut in mid-1944 in the Pacific and European theaters. Early P-61As lacked turbosuperchargers, limiting high-altitude performance, but they proved effective in intercepting enemy bombers and night intruders. The type marked a key advance in radar-guided aerial warfare.
