Description
The P-51 Mustang was a long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The P-51D model, introduced in early 1944, featured a new bubble canopy for improved visibility and six .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns. Powered by a Packard V-1650-7 engine, a license-built version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series, the P-51D was capable of speeds up to 437 mph (703 km/h). With its long range and excellent high-altitude performance, the P-51D proved to be one of the best fighters of World War II, serving as a bomber escort and in ground attack roles.
