Description
The P-51 Mustang was a remarkable fighter aircraft developed at extraordinary speed. In April 1940, the British Aircraft Purchasing Commission contracted North American Aviation, and the initial design was completed in just 117 days. Early sketches were drawn in a New York hotel room, leading to the NA-73 prototype, which rolled out at Mines Field in California without an engine and using wheels borrowed from an AT-6 Texan. Powered later by the Allison V-1710 engine, it first flew on 26 October 1940. Initially exported to Britain, the Mustang was later adopted and improved by the U.S. Army Air Forces. Later variants introduced a bubble canopy for better rear visibility and a dorsal fin for improved stability. The adoption of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine transformed its performance, making the P-51D—with six .50 caliber machine guns—the definitive WWII escort fighter, valued for its advanced design, balance, and long-range capability.
