Description
The North American P-51 Mustang was one of the most famous fighters of World War II, owing much of its success to British initiative. In 1940, the RAF commissioned North American Aviation to design a new fighter, leading to the rapid development of the NA-73X prototype, which first flew in October 1940. Powered initially by the Allison V-12 engine, early Mustangs offered excellent speed and range at low altitude but weak high-altitude performance, resulting in reconnaissance and ground-attack use. The breakthrough came with the installation of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, built in the USA by Packard, transforming the Mustang into a superb high-altitude escort fighter. Later P-51B/C and especially the bubble-canopy P-51D/K variants combined range, firepower, and performance, enabling effective bomber escort deep into enemy territory and securing air superiority over Europe.
