Description
The P-51 Mustang, one of WWII’s best fighters, was originally ordered by Britain in 1940. North American built the prototype in just 102 days, leading to the Mustang I. Early versions were tested by the U.S. as the XP-51, but interest declined until two were fitted with Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. These excelled at high altitudes, prompting production of the P-51B in California and the P-51C in Texas. Though differently named, the B and C models were nearly identical and marked a turning point, giving the Mustang the range and performance to escort bombers deep into enemy territory.
