Description

The North American P-51 Mustang was developed to British specifications as a high-performance fighter and was designed, built, and flown within just 117 days. Early production models, powered by a 1,150 hp Allison engine, entered RAF service in April 1942, followed by the Mk IA and Mk II variants. Due to the Allison engine’s limited high-altitude performance, these early Mustangs were mainly used for low-level reconnaissance. The aircraft gained fame with the more powerful Packard-built Merlin engine in the P-51B/C, known to the RAF as the Mustang III. Equipped with the bubble Malcolm canopy, long-range fuel tanks, and four 12.7 mm machine guns, it reached 711 km/h at 7,460 m. The Mustang III served as bomber escort, V-1 intercept fighter, and ground-attack aircraft, with around 900 aircraft operating in RAF squadrons.
