Description
The P-47D Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most powerful single-engine fighter aircraft of World War II. Built in huge numbers in the United States, it was powered by a massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine that gave it impressive speed and high-altitude performance. Known for its rugged construction, the P-47D could absorb significant battle damage and still return home safely. It carried eight .50 caliber machine guns and could be armed with bombs and rockets, making it deadly in both air combat and ground-attack missions. Nicknamed the “Jug,” it escorted bombers over Europe and dominated the skies.
