Description
In 1940 Alexander Kartveli of Republic Aviation designed the P-47 Thunderbolt, defying fighter norms that favored light, slim aircraft. Nicknamed the “Jug,” it became the largest and heaviest single-seat fighter of WWII, yet its 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp and advanced supercharger delivered outstanding performance. Early “razorback” models had limited rear visibility, later improved by a bubble canopy. First seeing combat in 1942 with the 8th Air Force, the P-47D became the main version. Fast, rugged, and heavily armed with eight .50 cal machine guns, bombs, and rockets, it excelled as a fighter-bomber in Europe and the Pacific, with over 15,000 built.
