Description
Conceived in 1940 by Alexander Kartveli for Republic Aviation, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt defied fighter norms with its massive size and 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine. Nicknamed the “Jug,” it became the most-produced American fighter of WWII, with over 15,000 built. Early “razorback” versions had limited rear visibility, later improved by bubble canopies. The P-47D introduced drop tank pylons for long-range escort. A rugged, stable gun platform, it excelled in Europe and the Pacific, destroying thousands of enemy vehicles and targets.
