The P-400, an export version of the Bell P-39 Airacobra, was a unique fighter with its engine behind the cockpit. Initially designed for high-altitude combat, it found success in low-altitude roles, particularly with Soviet forces on the Eastern Front.

Description
The P-39 Airacobra, designed by Bell and first flown in 1938, featured a unique mid-engine layout with the engine behind the cockpit and a 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub. It also carried two .50 cal nose guns and four .30 cal wing guns. Intended as a high-altitude interceptor, its lack of a turbocharger limited its performance above 17,000 feet, making it more suitable for low-altitude roles. The P-400 was the export version for the RAF, but most were redirected to the Soviet Union, where the P-39 proved highly effective. Soviet pilots, including top aces, used it with great success on the Eastern Front.
