Description

FIRST A FEW WORDS Bell P-39 Airacobra was the first American fighter aircraft with tricycle undercarriage and engine mounted behind the cockpit, driving the propeller through a long shaft. It was also the first fighter to be armed with a 37mm cannon, which fired through the propeller hub. Despite its unorthodox design it proved to be a capable fighter at low altitudes. P-39s were used by several Allied air forces, including the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), Soviet Air Force, Royal Air Force, and Free French Air Force. The Soviet pilots in particular held the P-39 in high regard. They found it to be agile, rugged and well armed. For the Soviets, the P-39 became one of their most important fighter aircraft of World War II.
