Description
The P-39 Airacobra was a unique fighter aircraft developed by Bell Aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces. It was one of the principal American fighter aircraft in service when the United States entered World War II. The P-39 was used by the Soviet Air Force, and enabled Soviet pilots to collect the highest number of individual kills attributed to any U.S. fighter type in any combat theater. Other major users of the type included the Free French, the Royal Air Force, the United States Army Air Forces, and the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force. Numerous features aided the P-39's performance, including a 37mm cannon in the nose of the aircraft, tricycle landing gear, and the placement of the engine behind the pilot.
