Description
Although the Lockheed P-38J was not the most widely produced version (2,970) of this famous fighter, it was the "J" model that first showed the true potential of this outstanding, single seat fighter aircraft. The P-38 was designed in 1937 by Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson, for the Lockheed Aircraft company in Burbank, California. It went into production in August 1940, and shortly following its introduction into combat in Europe, received the nickname of "Forked Tailed Devil" by Germany, because of its twin boom layout and destructive firepower.
This unusual twin boom format was chosen by Johnson to provide two engines, so that the U.S. Government speed and climb to altitude requirement could be met for a new U.S. Army Air Corps fighter. The P-38J/L-0 series began coming off Lockheed production lines in June 1944, but only the last 210 "J" models produced contained all of the modifications that made it such a fantastic long range fighter. Most of the earlier produced "J" versions were retrofitted with the modifications in the field, such as Mach limiting dive brakes, aileron boost, improved cockpit heating, cooling, etc.
Many versions of the P-38 saw active service with allied air forces throughout the world, as it was the first high altitude, long range fighter to enter combat following the outbreak of hostilities. It proved its true worth during the Mediterranean and South Pacific operations where its superior firepower, extra long range and reliability gave "ACE" status to many allied fighter pilots.
