Description

The P-38L (Lockheed Model 422) was the final production version of the famous single seat fighter. It differed little from the later production "J" models, with the major change being the engines used. 1600hp Allison V-1710-111/113 and 130L engines became standard on the "L" version.

The armament was also enhanced with the addition of underwing 4.5 inch, zero length, rocket trees. These (mounting 5 rockets) replaced the earlier twin, three tube rocket launchers of the Ezonoka type, and the experimental zero-length launcher stubs that had been added to the outboard wing panels.

The "L" version of the Lightning also carried AN/APS-13 tail warning radar. A total of 4,037 P-38L aircraft were built with 113 being produced by the Consolidated-Vultee plant in Nashville, Tennessee, before production was halted by the end of the conflict. The P-38L was by far the easiest allied aircraft to recognize, and it served throughout the second world war on all fronts and in all theaters of operation. It was designed in January 1939.
