Description
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was designed in 1937 by Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson at Lockheed Aircraft Company. The XP-38 first flew on 27 January 1939 with Ben Kelsey at the controls. Its twin-engine, twin-boom design made it one of the most distinctive fighters of World War II. The P-38F was the first to see extensive combat, entering action in 1942 in North Africa and the Pacific. Later P-38G and P-38H variants improved range and load capacity, carrying bombs or drop tanks. The Lightning served as a long-range escort, interceptor, and photo-reconnaissance aircraft throughout the war.
