Description
The Rolls-Royce Merlin engine powered Britain’s top warplanes early in WWII. Developing a new engine for the P-51 would take too long, so in 1940, Packard began licensed production of the Merlin V-1650-1 in Detroit. The U.S. and U.K. modified P-51 airframes nearly simultaneously. Ten modified airframes became the start of the most successful fighter series of the war. The XP-51B first flew on 30 November 1942, with improvements like a larger radiator, boosting top speed by 50 mph and ceiling by 10,000 ft. An 85-gallon tank behind the seat gave it range to escort bombers round-trip. One flaw was the canopy—too low for headroom and visibility. British specs required better view, so they fitted the Malcolm hood, slightly higher but aerodynamically sound. It improved visibility without reducing performance.
