Description
The Republic P-47D-22 Thunderbolt was a mid-war “razorback” fighter used by the US Army Air Forces in 1944. Powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, it was renowned for ruggedness, dive speed, and heavy firepower. The D-22 introduced a Hamilton Standard paddle-blade propeller, improving climb and acceleration. Armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns and able to carry bombs or drop tanks, it excelled as both a bomber escort and ground-attack aircraft. Its durability allowed it to absorb heavy damage and still return safely.
