Description
The North American P-51A was an early production variant of the famous Mustang fighter, developed as a low-altitude tactical reconnaissance and ground-attack aircraft. Powered by an Allison V-1710 engine, it offered good speed and maneuverability at lower altitudes but lacked high-altitude performance compared to later Merlin-powered versions. Entering service in 1942, it was used primarily by the US Army Air Forces and the RAF, where it was known as the Mustang II. Armament consisted of four 12.7 mm machine guns and it could carry bombs for ground attack missions. The P-51A reached a maximum speed of about 628 km/h, had a range of 1,200 km, and a service ceiling of around 9,800 m.
