Description
The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate ("Gale") was one of Japan’s most advanced fighter aircraft of World War II. Entering service in 1944, it combined high speed, heavy armament, and excellent maneuverability. Powered by the Nakajima Ha-45 radial engine, it could reach speeds over 390 mph and climb rapidly, matching or exceeding many Allied fighters at medium to high altitudes. Armed with two 12.7mm machine guns and two 20mm or 30mm cannons, the Ki-84 was a deadly opponent. It was rugged enough to face U.S. bombers and agile enough to dogfight Mustangs and Hellcats. However, poor production quality and maintenance issues limited its overall impact late in the war.
