Description
The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (Allied code name "Frank") was one of Japan’s most capable WWII fighters. Following earlier Nakajima successes like the Ki-27, Ki-43, and Ki-44, the Hayate featured a powerful 2,000hp Ha-45 engine, offering high speed, strong firepower, and improved armor. Approved in March 1944, it was quickly mass-produced and deployed across China, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan. It even gained temporary air superiority over China, facing P-40s and P-51s. Postwar U.S. tests praised it as Japan’s best fighter. About 3,500 units were built, making it Japan’s third-most produced fighter after the Zero and Hayabusa.
