Description
The Nakajima Ki44 Shoki ("Demon Queller") was a single-engine fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II. The Allied reporting name was "Tojo". The Ki44 was designed as a dedicated interceptor, with emphasis being placed on speed and rate of climb, rather than maneuverability. The Ki44 was developed to combat the B-29 Superfortress raids which devastated the Japanese homeland in the closing stages of World War II. The Ki44 was one of the few Japanese fighters to employ armor protection for the pilot, although this protection was only in the form of a 13mm armor plate behind the pilot. The Ki44 also featured self-sealing fuel tanks, and a weapon fit that included 2 x 12.7mm machine guns and 2 x 40mm cannons. The Ki44 was one of the most heavily armed Japanese fighters of World War II. The Ki44 was flown by some of Japan's most skilled pilots, and was considered to be a very effective fighter, although it was not produced in large numbers.
