Description
The Nakajima Ki-44, ordered in 1938 as a high-speed interceptor, prioritized speed and climb over maneuverability. Powered by Japan’s HA-41 and featuring small wings with “butterfly” combat flaps, it excelled in air-to-air combat, takeoff, and landing, though pilots noted poor visibility and low-speed instability. Adopted in 1942 as the Type 2 Single-Seat Fighter “Shoki” (Tojo), the Model 2 carried the more powerful HA-109 engine. Produced in three subtypes—Kō, Otsu, and Hei—it could carry cannons and light bombs, outperforming earlier Japanese designs and even some contemporaries. A total of 1,227 were built between 1940 and 1944. Data: Crew 1; L 8.9 m; W 9.45 m; H 3.12 m; max 2,764 kg; speed 605 km/h; HA-109 1,520 hp; armament 2×7.7 mm, 2×12.7 mm; bomb 30–250 kg.
