Description
Adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1937, the Ki-27 was quickly followed by development of its successor, the Nakajima Ki-43. Initial Ki-43 prototypes, tested in 1938, showed higher speed but disappointing maneuverability. After a long redesign process, the improved Ki-43 was reconsidered due to the need for long-range fighters for the Singapore campaign. Officially adopted as the Type 1 Fighter in May 1941, early Ki-43s served in Burma with great success. Upgraded to the Ki-43-Ia with a Ha-115 engine, it proved effective against Hurricanes and P-40s. Though outclassed by later Allied aircraft, it remained in service due to its simplicity and range.
