Description
The Ki-43 began development even as the Ki-27 entered IJA service in 1937. Its 1938 prototype proved faster but far less maneuverable, prompting major redesigns through 1940. Army leaders remained unconvinced until planners realized a need for long-range fighters for the Singapore campaign, reviving interest. A 1941 prototype finally delivered the agility and range required, and the Type 1 Fighter was adopted in May. Early Model 1s served in Burma, aiding rapid IJA advances. The improved Model II, with the Ha-115 engine and refined airframe, became the classic Ki-43 “Oscar,” effective early in the war but outclassed by Spitfires and P-38s from 1943 on. Still, its simplicity kept it in service to the end. Data: crew 1; span 10.84 m; length 8.92 m; speed 515 km/h; armament 2×12.7 mm MG.
