The Nakajima Ki43-I Hayabusa (Oscar) was a Japanese Army fighter with improved maneuverability and range. Initially tested in 1938-1941, it became familiar to Allied aviators despite being outclassed by later types like Spitfires.

Description

The Nakajima Ki-43 began development even as the Ki-27 entered IJAAF service in 1937. Its 1938 prototype reached 500 km/h but lacked the Ki-27’s agility, prompting major redesigns through 1940. Performance still failed to impress Army leaders until the need for long-range fighters for the Singapore campaign revived interest. A 1941 prototype finally delivered the desired maneuverability and range. Early Model 1 aircraft saw action with the 59th Fighter Group in 1941, proving effective during rapid IJA advances. The improved Model 2, with a refined airframe and Ha-115 engine, became the classic Ki-43 “Oscar,” formidable early in the war but later outclassed by Spitfires and P-38s. Still, its simplicity kept it in service to the end. Specs: crew 1; wingspan 10.84 m; length 8.92 m; height 3.27 m; wing area 21.4 m²; empty weight 1,580 kg; loaded 2,590 kg; engine 1,120 hp; max speed 515 km/h; armament 2×12.7 mm MG.
