Description
The Nakajima Ki-44 “Shoki” (Allied reporting name: Tojo) was a fast, high-climbing interceptor developed by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service during World War II. Entering service in 1942, it was powered by a Nakajima Ha-109 radial engine, giving it a top speed of about 580 km/h (360 mph) and excellent acceleration. Unlike earlier Japanese fighters, the Ki-44 emphasized speed and climb rate over maneuverability, allowing it to intercept high-flying bombers effectively. Armed with two 12.7 mm and two 7.7 mm machine guns—later upgraded to heavier cannons—it offered greater firepower than its predecessors. However, its high wing loading made it less agile, demanding skill from pilots. Despite this, the Ki-44 proved to be a tough and capable defender of Japan’s skies late in the war.
