Description
The Nakajima C6N1 Saiun was a fast Japanese carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft developed during WWII. Initially, engineers planned to use a twin-engine setup, but the emergence of the Homare 21 engine, producing 1,850hp, changed the design. Despite its poor high-altitude output, the engine was accepted. To achieve high speed, Nakajima narrowed the fuselage and reduced wing area for better streamlining. Slats and Fowler flaps improved takeoff performance, critical for carrier operations. A three-stage supercharger helped the aircraft climb quickly. The first prototype flew in April 1943, and production began in 1944. Officially designated C6N1 Type 11, it reached 609 km/h and later versions were modified as night fighters for homeland defense.
