Description

With no 2,000hp engines available, Nakajima initially proposed pairing two 1,000hp radial engines on a single driveshaft housed in the fuselage, driving propellers on each wing. However, the arrival of the new 1,830hp Homare radial engine shifted the plan. Despite its potential, the Homare only produced 1,600hp at high altitude, prompting a redesign.

To improve speed and performance, the aircraft's fuselage was narrowed, and wing area was reduced, which raised takeoff and landing speeds—a drawback for carrier use. To compensate, Nakajima added slats, fowler flaps, and a large 3.5m propeller to aid lift.

The prototype flew in April 1943, and mass production began a year later. In September 1944, the aircraft was designated C6N1 Type 11 Saiun. Though its 609km/h top speed was slightly lower than the prototype's, it was still fast enough to evade U.S. Hellcats. Some models were converted into night fighters armed with upward-firing 20mm or 30mm cannons to counter B-29 raids over Japan.
