Description

Lacking a 2,000hp engine, Nakajima initially proposed a unique solution for a new carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft: mounting two 1,000hp radials inline on a single shaft to power wing-mounted propellers. This plan was dropped after the introduction of the Homare 21 radial engine, rated at 1,820hp. However, its real output at altitude fell short, forcing major airframe redesigns to reduce drag—narrower fuselage, smaller wings, and advanced lift devices like slats and fowler flaps. A large 3.5m propeller aided carrier takeoffs.

The prototype flew in April 1943, and full production began a year later. Designated C6N1 Type 11 Saiun in September 1944, it reached 626 km/h—slightly less than the prototype but fast enough to evade U.S. Hellcats. Some units were converted into night fighters with upward-firing cannons to counter B-29 raids in the war’s final year.
