Description
At the beginning of 1943, the Japanese Navy issued specifications for a high speed carrier reconnaissance plane that would be capable of 350 knots at 20,000 ft. After intensive design work, the Nakajima Aircraft Co. produced the C6N1 'Saiun' in January of 1944. The 'Saiun' was powered by a 2,000 hp Nakajima NK9K-L 'Homare' engine. Crewed by three men, it had no armament except for one flexible 13mm machine gun in the rear. The 'Saiun' was the fastest carrier plane of WW2, able to cruise at 360 mph. In service, the 'Saiun' proved extremely difficult to intercept and was thus given the Allied code name 'Myrt' for myrtaceous, denoting elusive.
