Description
The Nakajima B6N2 "Tenzan" (Heavenly Mountain) was an aircraft developed to replace the B5N "Kate" torpedo bomber. In 1941, the Japanese Navy began development of a new carrier based torpedo bomber to replace the B5N. The B6N featured a more powerful engine, improved defensive armament and better overall performance than its predecessor. The aircraft first flew in 1942. The B6N entered service in August 1943 but its combat debut was disastrous, with 4 of the 12 aircraft lost in the initial attack. Later versions of the aircraft equipped with radar for night operations saw limited use. Despite its improved performance over the B5N, the B6N arrived too late to have any significant impact.
