Description
n 1935, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) tasked Mitsubishi and Nakajima with developing a new carrier-based attack bomber, called the Type Ten. Nakajima saw this as a crucial project and designed the Type 97, their first low-wing, all-metal monocoque aircraft.
The Type 97 featured retractable landing gear, a narrow fuselage seating three crew members in tandem, and upward-folding wings for better carrier storage. It used a three-bladed, two-stage adjustable pitch propeller to optimize engine power.
The initial Model 1 (B5N1) was adopted in 1937 with a less powerful "Hikari" engine but still met IJN requirements. Later, the Model 3 (B5N2) was upgraded with the stronger "Sakae" engine and adopted in 1939.
The Type 97 played a key role in the Pearl Harbor raid of 1941, delivering accurate bombs and torpedoes, including specially designed shallow-water torpedoes. It fought alongside the Zero fighter and Aichi "Val" dive bomber in early Pacific campaigns like the Solomons and Indian Ocean.
