Description
The North American P-51D Mustang was a premier American long-range fighter of World War II. Powered by the Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-1650-7 engine delivering 1,695 hp, it reached speeds up to 437 mph (703 km/h) at 25,000 ft (7,620 m) and had a range exceeding 1,600 miles (2,575 km) with drop tanks. The P-51D featured a laminar-flow wing, bubble canopy for excellent visibility, and six .50 caliber Browning machine guns. Entering service in 1944, it excelled as a bomber escort over Europe and in the Pacific, proving decisive in achieving Allied air superiority. Over 8,000 P-51Ds were built, and it remained in service for decades postwar.
