Description
The increasing obsolescence of the MS 406 led Finnish Air Force to order, on 22 October 1942, the installation of a Klimov M-105P in an MS 406 airframe. A substantial quantity of this powerplant, together with suitable VISh-61P propellers, had been captured by the Wehrmacht and was available to the Finns. The prototype conversion was flown in February 1943 as the Mörko (Ghost) or Mörko-Morani. Successful trials resulted in the decision to bring all surviving MS 406 and MS 410 fighters to Mörko standard, but only two more were completed before termination of the Finnish-Soviet conflict. Nevertheless, the conversion programme continued bringing the total number of Mörko delivered to Finnish inventory to 41 aircraft. The Mörko remained in service until September 1948. Technical specification: Span: 34 ft 9 5/8 in (10.62 m) Length: 27 ft 6 in (8.38 m). Max. speed: 326 mph (525 km/h) at 13125 ft (4000 m)
