Description

The Brewster F2A Buffalo was an early American monoplane naval fighter developed in the late 1930s by the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation. Designed by Dayton T. Brown and R. D. MacCart, it was created to replace the biplane Grumman F3F. The prototype XF2A-1 first flew in December 1937 and featured all-metal construction, retractable landing gear, and a radial engine. While it performed poorly in many Allied services, the lighter Finnish Model 239 version proved highly effective. Operated by the Finnish Air Force, it excelled in maneuverability and combat performance during the Continuation War, where several Finnish pilots became aces. Nicknamed “Taivaan Helmi” (Pearl of the Sky), the aircraft remained in Finnish service until 1948.
