Description
The Japanese Navy experienced several small-scale Chinese air raids after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. To strengthen air defense, it ordered Mitsubishi to develop the 14-Shi Interceptor Fighter, which became the J2M Raiden ("Thunderbolt"). Designed by Jiro Horikoshi's team, the aircraft used a powerful Mitsubishi Kasei radial engine mounted behind the cockpit and connected to the propeller by an extension shaft, reducing drag and creating its distinctive streamlined nose. The prototype first flew in March 1942, but visibility and cooling problems required major modifications. Production of the J2M2 Raiden Model 11 began in September 1943. The improved J2M3 carried four 20 mm cannons and became the main production version. Used mainly to intercept American B-29 bombers, the Raiden proved effective, though technical issues and limited production restricted its wartime impact.
