Description
By 1943, Japan’s Zero Type 21 was outmatched by newer U.S. fighters. The Zero Type 52 was a major redesign aimed at improving performance. Key changes included shortening the wingspan from 12 to 11 meters, revising the engine cowling, and adding a thrust-type exhaust, boosting top speed to 565 km/h—24 km/h faster than the Type 22. It also featured upgraded belt-fed Type 99-2 Model 4 20mm cannons and a thicker wing chord for better dive speed. A variant, the '302FG,' added 13mm machine guns. Around 6,000 Type 52s were built and served until Japan’s surrender in 1945.
