Description
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero, Japan’s most iconic fighter, debuted in 1939 as arguably the best carrier-based aircraft of its time. Designed by Jiro Horikoshi, it featured innovations like retractable gear, a variable-pitch propeller, and 20mm wing cannons. The A6M1 prototype first flew in April 1939, reaching 490 km/h. Later versions, powered by a 940hp Sakae engine, hit 533 km/h. Adopted as the A6M2 Model 11 in July 1940, it proved lethal in China, downing 59 aircraft for just two losses. The improved Model 21, with carrier features, led Japan’s early WWII victories at Pearl Harbor, Wake, and the Philippines.
